Welcome to JS Grips!
Let me introduce myself. My name
is Joel Shapiro, and I live in Rancho Cordova, California. I
started making grips in August of 2007 and I offer a limited number of handmade pistol grips
for sale.
The grips are made of exotic, highly figured woods, starting with briar. Briar is from the root burl of Erica Arborea, which is a variety of heath tree that grows in the Mediterranean basin. The most common use for this wood is in making smoking pipes, which I also do (http://www.jspipes.com). Briar is a very hard and durable wood, and makes an excellent set of grips.
Finishes
I will offer three different types of finishes. Smooth, sandblasted, and rusticated.
- Rusticated: The rusticated finish is made using a series of handmade chisels to roughen the surface of the wood. This provides the most positive grip. These grips are not given the presentation finish.
- Smooth: The smooth finish is sanded to 600 grit and finished in a way that shows the grain to best effect.
- Sandblast: The sandblasted finish is made by blasting the grip surface to remove the pith in between the grain. It especially shows off the ring grain. The sandblasted finish is not a very aggressive texture, but provides for a better grip than smooth while still showing off the grain structure.
Availability
- Ruger Old Model Vaquero (Ruger Vaquero), Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk, Old Army, Ruger New Vaquero, and the .32 caliber small frame Vaquero.
- Colt/Clones: I can do grips for Uberti and Pietta clones. I'm not sure yet if the screw holes on a Colt grip frame will line up with either of those. The frames are too variable in size and shape for me to be sure that grips made for my guns will fit your guns. I will need your gripframe to make your grips. Since you won't need to ship the entire gun, USPS Priority Mail or UPS shipping can be used at minimal additional cost.
- As I am able to acquire more samples for guns, more grips will be offered. I intend next to get a Colt and a USFA.

- Rustcated grips are priced at $125 + shipping.f
- Smooth grips are priced at $150 + shipping.
- Sandblasted grips are priced at $175 + shipping.
- Fitting is available for no extra charge.
If you don't see a set of grips for your gun available, or in a finish that you like, please contact me via e-mail and I'll be able to either customize a set of existing grips or make yours to order. There are no additional charges for custom work beyond the prices set out above.
